Sunday Russian Assembly

Tonight we had our normal Russian assembly, but were excited to have some visitors. One couple just moved to Kharkov and got our contact information from a preacher in another city whom we have never met. However, he got our contact information from an invitation that we sent in the mail inviting their congregation to our Creation Seminar back in December.

Again, sorry for the poor quality of the photos. I keep telling Lucy I need to get a phone with a better camera on it!

Ukrainian Election

Yesterday was the Ukrainian Presidential Election. Since no candidate received over 50% of the vote there will be a run-off vote in three weeks. Attached is a picture from today's newspaper showing the areas of the country where the two leading candidates won. The country is pretty split down the middle.

Swimming in Freezing Water

Yesterday while at our weekly men's team meeting at the office (Coffee Life) we met a young man from China by the name of Yang Ping Jian, or simple "Kevin." Kevin joined us at our table and we talked for a couple of hours. During the course of the conversation, Kevin told us that he had recently gone to the Botanical Gardens and swam in the fresh spring water there. This is something that I have been wanting to do for a long time, so I finally decided to give it a try. David and I both set up a time to meet Kevin on Saturday morning.

So this morning we went to the Botanical Gardens and took turns getting in to the freezing cold water. One of the worst parts of the whole process was standing on top of ice barefoot while waiting to get in. Of course the water was super cold as well. It took me a few moments to build up the courage to stick my head under the water!

So David and I have decided that this can become something that we take our winter visitors to while in Kharkov :)

After this we had Kevin over to our apartment for coffee. After coffee David, Kevin, and I headed to the market for some Chinese food. After the market, Kevin hung out over here for a little bit longer.

While Kevin was getting ready to leave he told me that he flipped through the New Testament that I had given him the day before. I told him that I would love to talk to him about it sometime and he said that it sounded like a good idea.

Kevin will be leaving Kharkov in a couple of weeks to go to Hong Kong and will return in April. We hope to keep in contact through email and Skype. Please pray for David and I as we continue to develop a friendship with this great guy!

A Worker is Worthy of His Wages

I just decided to write a short post about our friends and teammates, Brandon and Katie Price. As you may know, they joined our mission team a while back and have been planning on moving to Kharkov sometime this summer. Since their decision to join this team, they have been seeking out financial partners to make this a possibility. They have also been seeking at a congregation that would be their "sponsoring congregation."

So far they have had not much luck. They have made several presentations and some congregations have shown some interest, but as of now, no congregation has made a commitment.

I want to ask two things of you:

1. Please be praying for the Prices as they continue to seek out financial partners.

2. Please consider supporting them or talking with somebody at your congregation about supporting them.

Here is their website: http://brandonandkatie.com

A Lesson Learned from Canaan

This morning while Max and Lucy were still asleep, Canaan and I were playing together in the living room. He asked me to rebuild his train set that he got for Christmas since Max had torn it down yesterday. While putting the set back together again, Canaan would get too impatient and start to put his trains on the tracks, which would knock over some of what I had done. After a few times of this I got frustrated and raised my voice at Canaan and told him to not do it again.

After a couple more minutes I knocked over some of the tracks too. Here is the conversation that took place next:

Canaan: You knocked over the tracks.

Me: Yes I did.

Canaan: That was an accident dad.

Me: Yes it was an accident Canaan.

Canaan: Mine was an accident too.

Me: Yes, your's was an accident too. I'm sorry that I got upset with you Canaan.

Canaan: That's okay daddy.

Now What?

Recently our new brother Andrei called to see if he could come over for a little while to talk. I wasn't doing anything at the time, so I agreed. When he arrived he said something like this: "I've just been baptized, now what?" We talked for a while about the "now what" things, then Andrei expressed his desire.
He shared with Lucy and I his heart for serving orphans. He has helped over the past couple summers at camps for orphans, but he wants to do something more than just in the summer. So right now we are all praying and thinking about how we would like to serve orphans. Please be praying with us.
At the end of our conversation, Andrei said something like this: "What good is it to be a Christian if we are not helping and serving people?"

I guess I am sharing this with you because I love Andrei's heart. I hope and pray we find many more people like him in Kharkov. I wish everyone who decided to follow Jesus would ask the same question, "now what?"

Rejoicing in Heaven (and in Kharkov!)

Today we are rejoicing with the angels in heaven as our friend Andrei has become our brother in Christ. Andrei is a great guy who we have enjoyed getting to know while living here in Kharkov. Please pray for him as he begins his new life in Jesus.

Pie Party

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, our team decided to invite all of our friends over for Thanksgiving pies. While most did not show up, we still had seven of our friends come to our apartment for this time of fun and fellowship.

I'll Take the Pennies!

One principle in church planting movements is, "Go slow to go fast." The idea is that you invest your time in a few people, who are also investing their time in a few people, and so on. If this is done, the process of "church growth" is usually slow in the beginning, but grows at an exponential rate.

In thinking about this last night, Lucy brought up something she remembered from a math text book. Here is the deal. Option 1: I give you $2740 every day for the next year. Option 2: I give you one penny on the first day, but double the amount each additional day for a year. Which option would you choose? I think the typical person (who didn't know any better) would choose option 1. It is quick money and it sounds like a lot better of a deal than getting pennies. For the person who chose option 1, you would receive 1 million dollars after the first year. For those who chose the second option, about 5.3 million dollars in a year.

Yes, there are church planting methods that produce results very quickly and in large numbers. The problem is that if the people are not multiplying themselves, then in the end, the results won't be so amazing (or maybe lasting). However, for those who take the time and invest in a few, multiplying themselves, the results can be amazing.

As we are beginning our work in Kharkov, this is one of the principles we are trying to put into practice. It may be slow, but it is supposed to be slow. We are seeking out those few with whom we can invest our lives in and who in turn will do the same with others.

Book Notes No More

Well, I have come to the conclusion that I will not be posting my notes from my readings anymore on my blog. I have enjoyed doing it and have enjoyed the few comments that have been given. However, it just takes so much more time to try and outline each chapter of a book. My reading list is getting longer and longer, but I'm just not getting through the books fast enough. So maybe I will just try and write a short review of the books I read when I finish one and then place it on my blog.

Organic Leadership Notes - Chapter 5

Now that I am back from Budapest and getting back into my routine, I have decided to continue with posting my notes on Neil Cole's, "Organic Leadership." Please feel free to comment!

Bound by the Chain of Command: Messed Up from the Top to Bottom

The main idea of this chapter is the contrast of worldly style leadership and Kingdom style leadership (Matt. 20:25-28). The world's leadership model is a hierarchical, with one person at the top with various levels beneath that one person. Each person is answerable to the person above them. Kingdom leadership has one person at the top: Jesus. Under him all are on a level plain. All people are equally answerable and accountable to Jesus and Him alone. The picture the Bible uses is of a body. Jesus is the head and Christians are the body. The head controls the body and no member of the body is more important than another.

Cole says that the church has adopted the world's leadership style because it is all we know. It is a leadership model that works. Imagine a military that did not have hierarchical leadership.

"Why are we afraid of the flat structure of the body of Christ? I believe it is because we are so used to a hierarchical structure we cannot imagine that any other system could work, and without our usual structure everything would fall apart, chaos would ensue, and we would have anarchy, as each part does its own thing" (pg. 89).

Three Common Concerns:

1. Anarchy

  • "Without Christ in people's hearts and his leadership in their lives, there would be anarchy unless someone is in charge, keeping order" (pg. 89).
  • Cole is not suggesting that we all be in charge, but than no one be in charge.
  • Instead of everybody doing what is right in their own eyes, we should do what is right in the Lord's eyes.
2. A Lack of Leadership
  • We have tied leadership to a hierarchical structure.
  • The New Testament talks of leaders and we assume that this means people over other people (top down structure).
  • "Overseer does not mean the person is over the others looking down; it means he is among the others looking over (1 Tim. 3:1-7; Tit. 1:7-9)" (pg. 90).
  • Leaders are "scanning the skies, watching for incoming missles, and at the same time searching for new directions they can head in service to the King."
  • Leadership is "among" not "over." (1 Pet. 5:1-4)
  • 1 Thess. 5:12 really means "go before" not "over." Leading from among the flock by going first.
  • 1 Tim. 3:1 - The word "office" is not in the original language, but added by translators.
3. Lack of Order
  • We have mistaken order for control.
  • The Holy Spirit was in control in the book of Acts. "Rapid expansion was taking place in the church, but the Holy Spirit was maintaining order" (pg. 91).
  • It is possible to have an out-of-control kingdom that maintains order.
  • DNA of God's Organic Kingdom
  • Divine Truth
  • Nurturing Relationships
  • Apostolic Mission
  • When the DNA is found in even the smallest meetings (2 or 3 Christians), then it will be maintained in the larger context as well.
  • Rather than destroying the worldly model of leadership from the church, Cole suggest reforming the people and that will eventually make the old model no longer necessary. Every person must be empowered to do God's work, not just leaders. "If leaders simply ignored their positions and titles and functioned out of the authority Christ gives to all of us, we would not only still be leaders, we'd be better ones." "If the people no longer looked to their leaders for their order but to the Head, we would be operating in the New Testament pattern (pg. 95).
